OO LMIA

An Owner Operator LMIA lets foreign entrepreneurs get work authorization to run and manage their own business in Canada, as long as they meet strict Service Canada requirements.

The OO LMIA can raise your CRS score by up to 200 points and provides a dedicated pathway for foreign business owners, unlike a regular LMIA.

  • Own a registered Canadian business with at least 50% ownership.
  • Show your business will create jobs or transfer skills to Canadians.
  • Hold a key role in the company and be actively involved in its management.
  • Provide a strong business plan with funding, projections, and hiring plans.
  • Have the qualifications for the role and earn at least the median wage.
  • Commit to hiring at least one Canadian or PR within the first year.

The OO LMIA is usually processed in about 4 weeks, while the work permit takes an additional 8–12 weeks, depending on your country of residence.

EXPRESS ENTRY

Express Entry is Canada’s online system that ranks skilled immigrants by CRS score and invites the top candidates to apply for permanent residency.

Express Entry encompasses several economic immigration programs, including:

  • Federal Skilled Worker Program
  • Federal Skilled Trades Program
  • Canadian Experience Class

To apply for Express Entry, follow these steps:

  1. Create a profile: Under one of the three primary programs mentioned above.
  2. Receive an Invitation to Apply (ITA): If you have a competitive CRS score, IRCC will send you an ITA for permanent residency.
  3. Apply for permanent residency: You’ll have up to one year from the date of your ITA to complete and submit your application.

You can include your spouse/partner and dependent children in your application. Dependents are generally under 22 and unmarried, or 22+ with a qualifying condition. If you obtain PR through Express Entry, your included family members receive PR as well.

STUDY PERMIT

A Study Permit allows you to study at a Designated Learning Institution (DLI) in Canada and is required for all international applicants.

Study Permit eligibility requirements:

  • Letter of Acceptance from a DLI

  • Proof of funds for tuition, living costs, and return travel.

  • Clean criminal record and police certificate if required.

  • Medical exam if requested.

  • Show intent to leave Canada after completing your studies.

  • Work While Studying: Work up to 24 hours per week during classes and full-time during school breaks while enrolled in an eligible program.
  • Spouse and Family: Your spouse can apply for an open work permit, and your children can study or visit while you study full-time.
  • PGWP: After graduation, you may obtain a work permit of up to three years, depending on your program length.

Processing times vary by country, but on average, a Study Permit takes around 6 to 12 weeks.

START-UP VISA

The Start-up Visa Program brings innovative entrepreneurs to Canada and offers a pathway to launch your venture.

  • Qualifying Business: Applicants must each hold 10 percent, jointly control over 50 percent with the organization, and later manage the business from Canada.
  • Letter of support: You must secure a support letter from a designated organization by pitching your business and meeting its requirements.
  • Language requirement: You must score at least CLB 5 in all four skills on an approved English or French test.

You must show you have enough funds for yourself and your family.
